ANALYTICAL MEASUREMENT
GSI offers a broad range of analytical measurement products for the analysis of liquid or gaseous process streams. Liquid measurements include pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and density. Gas analytical include oxygen, combustible gas, toxic gas, and flame detection.
pH Transmitters, Sensors and Cables
pH is a measurement of the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 with water being a neutral value of 7. Hydrochloric acid has a value close to 0 and Potassium Hydroxide has a value of 14. pH sensors are calibrated with fluids (referred to as buffers) of known pH values. A broad range of sensor types, materials, and mounting configurations are available to suit the particular process.

Combustion Oxygen
Zirconia oxygen analyzers are used to measure the concentration of oxygen in a flue gas stream. The flue gas passes across a heated zirconia cell that has a platinum electrode on each side of the cell. One side of the cell is exposed to air (reference) and the other side of the cell is exposed to the stack gas (sample). Oxygen ions flow through the heated zirconia cell from one electrode to the other. The Nernst equation can be applied to calculate the force by measuring the electromotive force generated by the two electrodes. The probe is mounted in-situ in the stack gas stream at process conditions.

Density
Liquid density measurement is available utilizing coriolis or nuclear technologies. The coriolis sensor measures the frequency of vibration of a tube while the nuclear instrument measures the amount of radiation that passes through a fluid. Gas densitometers consist of a vibrating spool whose frequency varies with the density of the gas surrounding it.

Gas Detection
Protecting personnel and plant safety, gas detectors warn of abnormal levels of toxic, explosive, or flammable gases. Infrared technology is utilized to measure flammable hydrocarbon gases in the LEL range such as natural gas. Catalytic sensors are primarily used for Hydrogen gas in the LFL range. Electrochemical sensors measure levels of toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, and sulfur dioxide.
